Nomad 5 Year Anniversary Party! Communist Daughter, Sidewalk Cafe + More!

03/15/10

The Nomad is going to be celebrating it's 5th year on the West Bank this Monday, March 15. Come out to the bar and celebrate with us. Local indie rockers Communist Daughter (who's song "Not The Kid" recently peaked at #1 on 89.3 The Current's Chart Show!) are going to perform at 7pm. Then jazz violinist Regina Carter is coming over from her show at Northrup Auditorium for a meet and greet, while gypsy jazz trio Sidewalk Cafe take the stage at 9pm close out the evening. Complimentary Hours d' oeuvres will be provided until 5pm. You can start showing up at 3pm because that's when we're going to get there. Tell your friends, but don't bring your kids.

The Nomad Pub is located on The West Bank at 501 Cedar Ave S, Minneapolis MN 55454.

about the artists:
Communist Daughter:

"Fragile, daydreaming harmonies. Swirling synths that spin and spin until they fall down dizzy. Steady-galloping drums that coolly pass you by. These Midwestern boys have wrapped them all up into rip-your-heart out ballads about getting older but not necessarily happier – songs that capture the old joy of classic records and do-nothing days, and the ache of knowing they're mostly gone. Yes, there's a good kind of sadness, and this is what it sounds like."- Melissa Maerz, Rolling Stone Magazine

Regina Carter:

"Wonderfully listenable, probingly intelligent, and at times breathtakingly daring."  - Time Magazine

Acclaimed as one of the most transcendent voices of contemporary violin, Regina Carter brings her tenacious force to the Ted Mann stage to coincide with the May 18 release of her upcoming album, Reverse Thread. Consisting mainly of African folk tunes, Reverse Thread is her latest contribution to the world of contemporary jazz offering an uplifting and stirring new perspective on music from Mali, Senegal and other areas. This unique evening includes some traditional pieces from Ugandan Jews, a piece by Ayub Ogada (from the movie The Constant Gardener), some music from the African Diaspora, as well as original material and earlier repertoire.

Known for her original compositions and collaborations with many jazz greats, Carter illuminates the stage with her unique fusion of world music and classical violin, interweaving instruments from Mali (the kora) and Senegal (powerful drum rhythms). Carter's quartet brings together Will Holshouser (accordion), Chris Lightcap (bass), Alvester Garnett (drums), and special guest from Mali, Yocouba Sissoko (kora).

Sidewalk Cafe:

Twin Cities based ensemble, Sidewalk Café plays the 1930s gypsy jazz popularized by guitarist Django Reinhart and legendary jazz violinist Stephane Grappelli. The well crafted trio digs deep into its swinging roots, playing with such bravado and passion that makes it easy for all ages to enjoy. The trio consists of Gary Schulte (violin), Reynold Philipsek (jazz guitar), and Jeff Brueske (bass).
