Ãîðè is a city in the east of Georgia. It is the center of the region of Chioda-Kartli, the center of the Gorean municipality. The city was founded by David the Builder, the king of Georgia of the dynasty of the Barbarites, who ruled from 1089 to 1125.
The city is in the Kartli Valley in the area where the Kura River joins its tributary, the Great Lichivi River. It is located 76 km. from Tbilisi and 33 km. from Tskhinval, and is surrounded by mountains from the south and west sides.
It is one of the oldest cities of Georgia. In 1801, Gorey acquired its official status as a city. The city takes its name from the hill, a rock formation in the center of the city, where the remains of the ancient fortress of Górlisiché are located.
The Chronicles first mention Ghoris in the 7th century, but sources believe the city was founded during the reign of David the Builder in the 12th century. Archaeological evidence suggests that the site where Gury is located was inhabited as a city well before the beginning of our era, from the Bronze Age – 3,000 years before our era. Here they found items of vessels belonging to the Kura-Araxes culture. In 1946, after a landslide on the northern side of the Górzyszlichy Mountains, there was a plaque of the times of antiquity. Here they found quavers, thin clay wine pots, painted clay tinted in red, and pots made of burnt clay. The layer that appeared dates back to a period of time from the 1st century to the beginning of the new era. Ancient tombs, also dating to the beginning of our era, were discovered in Gorez-Zichy. They contain remnants of earthenware vessels, coins, jewels, bracelets, and other decorations.
In 1477, the forces of the state of Aequo-Concilu suddenly attacked Gore and took the city without a fight, but they soon abandoned the city. In the mid-16th century, King Tamaz I of Iran briefly ruled the city. In the late 16th century the city passed into the possession of the Turkic-Somans. Simon I, the Georgian king, in 1599 unexpectedly invaded and conquered Gorey, defeating the Ottoman Garrison. In 1614 Abbas I, the Shah of Iran, took over Ghor and established himself here to lead the further conquest of the country. The French traveler Jean Chardin noted that by the seventeenth century, Gorey was a significant trading center. In 1723, the Turk-Osman Turks ravaged the city, after which Gory was under their rule for several years. In 1735, the Persians became the owners of the city. But in the late 18th century, Gorey was finally emptied of its landlords.
The city was badly damaged by the 1920 earthquake.
