Charlotte Amalie

Overall Score

3.6

Charlotta-AMALIA – the largest city and administrative center in the territory of the American Virgin Islands. The city is located on the southern coast of the island of St. Thomas. It occupies an area of coastal plain surrounded by hills.

Charlotta Amalie was founded by the Danish in 1666 under the name Òapahouse. Later, the village was renamed in honor of a companion of King Crétien V of Denmark. In consequence, the city attracted the attention of the pirates. The deep cove enclosed by the Hessel Island was a great refuge for criminals. Over time, the islands were taken over by the United States, and the town became a popular tourist destination in the Caribbean basin.

The Port of Charlotte-Amalia is a port of call for ships, but large, big ships dont go around the city. From here, you can get anywhere on the island, which is lined with beach areas and hotels. Charlotte Amalie still has buildings from the Danish period, with the most notable being the Fort of Crisiana (1680) and the Castle of Blackbeard (1676). The city has a lot of parks and trapezoidal greenery.
