Alzhar is the largest city, port and capital of a single state. The Arabic language adopted the name & làquo;al-Jazzair» which means «islands». Before 1525, there were four islands near the citys waterfront, which are now joined to the matérique. Algeria spread out along the Mediterranean coast, and the old part is on a hill (140 meters) and its slopes.

The city was founded by Arabs in 944 on the site of the ruined settlement of the Roman Empire of Exxeousium. Later on, Algeria passed into the possession of the Turks. In the 16th century the Spanish tried to take possession of a strategic port city, but were unsuccessful. By that time, Algeria was already one of the key bases of the Romanian pirates. In 1830, the French invaded Algeria, and the city became the administrative center of the colony. Algeria was the most important strategic center of World War II, as it housed the headquarters of the Allied Forces. In the Antinuclear and Communist War of Independence, Algeria was one of the main centers. In 1962, the city changed its status from a colonial capital to the independence of the Peoples Democratic Republic of Algeria.

Allurger – a modern megalopolis with a metropolitan area of about 5 million inhabitants. The countrys booming economic hub, the countrys economic heartland, launched in 2011 the Metropolitan Transit Line project, the first in the Maghreb countries and the second in Africa.

The colonial past had an impact on the region of Algeria, which has taken on the traits of the Arab and European worlds. The new quarters are filled with modern buildings, skyscrapers, and high-rise residential complexes. The main features are located in Old Town. The Kasba hill fort, densely studded with ancient quarters, is considered to be the heart of Algeria. Now the fortress has no clear boundaries, and the name Kasba is applied to the entire historical center of Algeria. Other significant architectural monuments are the Great Church (1096), and the Ketzhava Church (1612), Jehaddi-al-Jadjah (17th century), Sidad Abdarrahmanyan Mosque, Cathedral of the Mother of God of Africa (1872). The symbol of the city and of the countrys independence – the 92-meter Monument of Glory and Martyrdom (1982). In commemoration of the struggle for liberation, the Parc de la Paix al-Fatah (Garden of Victory) – a showcase of traditional villages and folk traditions in the exhibit pavilions. Among the museums, the most noteworthy – the Museum of the Primitive Bardhaud Museum.
