The ancient city of Batutaumi is located on the banks of the Black Sea coast in the form of a half moon. Its territory is crossed by the rivers Korylinskaya and Barkhana.

The name of the city comes from the Svanic root & áàò» – stone. The Greek version of the origin of this word is called «átâtîs» – deep. Indeed, among the Georgian ports Batuta is second only to the Sukhumsk Port in depth. But there is no definite version.

The ancient ancient Greek city of Batutus dates back to the 4th century. But we know that in the late 2nd century the local people were actively trading with their neighbors. In the 2nd century, the Romans who founded the fortress, which was taken by Jeremiah in the 5th century, succeeded in establishing there. In the 6th-8th centuries, Batatami (then the present name) was ruled by the rulers of the kingdom of Egeria. After Batumi, it became part of the Kingdom of Teo-Clarrages, which was replaced by the Kingdom of Georgia. In the 15-16th centuries, the Turks tried to conquer the city. They succeeded in 1564. Since then, Islam has spread in Adjara. The defeat in the Russo-Turkish War forced the Empire to pay the colonial rule. As part of the control, the territory of Adjara, together with Batumi, was given to Russia. In 1918-20 Batum was occupied successively by the Turks and Anglians, until the Crusaders, who annexed the Georgian Democratic Republic (1921), entered the city. In 1936, Batumi got its present name. Since 1990, the capital of the Autonomous Republic of Adjara is part of Georgia.

Batumi – a fast-growing resort city. A balmy, humid summer season, and the citys beach has stretched for several kilometers. Along it stretches the Primorsky Park (Boulevard). The old city has a distinctly angular layout. The streets are mainly built in 19th-century buildings. There are three museums in Batumi: an archaeological museum, a museum of history and a museum of art. There is a botanical garden, lots of pictures and parks. It is also attractive with its holy cathedral, its Italian square, which reminds us of Venice, the monuments to Puskin, to Nastaveli, to soldiers of the Great Patriotic War and to the Medea Column with its golden hand.
