Monaco, the capital of a single state, is a seaport on the Lazarus Sea coast of the Mediterranean Sea. The modern city has retained the romance of yesteryear in its current appearance. At the front door of the princely palace, as in former times, the traditional ceremony of changing the karaul takes place. Monaco was first founded in 1215 as the fortress of Monaco to protect the kingship from the attacks of the intruders. The royal kingship of the 17th century was transformed dramatically during the time of Prince Honorius II. Its interior rooms have been redesigned to make them comfortable and convenient to live in. The interior furnishings and decorations are distinctive and refined. The walls were decorated with unmistakable works of art. For all the great beauty of the interior of the rooms, the interior of the castle remains unchanged. The castle was a defensible structure.

The ancient palace has been restored and improved many times over the years. It now houses the Museum of the Prince and his family, and part of the premises are used by the Museum of Napoleon and the Archives of the Documents of the Princely Estates. The Palace Archive contains a unique collection of postage stamps and coins. The rich Palace Library holds nearly 120,000 books.

The Cathedral, built in 1875 during the reign of Charles III, is fascinating for its architecture. The building did not take its present form until 1884. On the cathedrals dome is a magnificent mosaic. There is also a Museum of Oceanography in Monaco, which is rare in the world, as well as an internationally renowned Museum of Oceanography. The medieval streets of the old town take you back to the past with their untold secrets and unsolved mysteries.
