In the Eastern State territory of the South-Western part of the Indian State lies the city of Port Louis, the capital of the Republic of Mauritius. Most citizens are descendants of Indian laborers who came to the island in the 19th century. Port Louis, founded by the French in 1735, was named for King Louis XV. Initially, the new settlement was established as a French outpost for ships sailing to Cape Good Hope. Its first inhabitants were the natives brought to Mauritius by the French and English in the 18th century.
The local economy relies primarily on the production of sugar, oil, and tobacco. The main building of the capital, the House of Government, which houses the Government Conference, rises in the center of the city in the famous Plaza de la Arms. Nearby is the Parliament building. Surrounded by magnificent gardens, the Gardens are home to the National Museum, whose rooms house valuable artifacts. There are almost everywhere small shops, markets and markets, in particular the colorful and noisy bazaar of the Rue de la Courrierie, the popular open market of the Faubourg Street with its assortment of merchandise. One of the citys neighborhoods is the Chinese Quarter, which occupies an area on Corollary Street. Here the architectural structure, the Jumma Church, built in the 19th century, rises. Nearby is the Pagoda. On Muammar El Hadafy Square is the Muslim Quarter.
Near the market, the Museum of Natural History is located. Among its exhibits is an exhibit of a dodo, one of a species of lobster species that was abused by humans in the 17th century. In the northeastern part of Port Louis there is the sepulchre of Père Laval, who converted nearly a thousand Moorish people into Catholics.
The district of Le Caudan is known as the center of the citys nightlife. The waterfront of Port Louis is remarkable for its array of restaurants, magazines, bars, and modern movie theaters. Especially those stores that have a fair trade are a special attraction.
