The capital of Macedonia, Scopus is situated on the banks of the River Vardar. The city is over 2,300 years old and has performed many different functions over the years: A major trading center in the days of Old Rome, it was the capital of the Bulgarian Empire in the Middle Ages, and was also under the rule of the Constantinople, Serbia, and the Ismenean Empire. In 1689, the Austrian commands initiative was to burn the city completely in order to halt the epidemic of pandemonium. During World War I and World War II, the city participated in all the terrible events in the Balkans. In 1963, the city was severely destroyed in a major earthquake, but quickly rebuilt.

Macedonias capital today is a major industrial center with metal and oil companies, chemical and electrical engineering, and highly sophisticated light manufacturing: leather, textiles, tobacco products, carpeting.

There are many museums in Scopje, the most important being the Museum of the National Museum, the National Gallery of Bani Daudela Pasha, the Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts. Scopje is home to a major railway station and an international airport, considered to be the worst developed among European capitals. The largest cross in eastern Europe has been on the Mount Scopje for thousands of years.

Scopje has many icons, one of which is the 15th-century bridge across the Vardar River. This bridge is depicted on the citys grotto. Tourists are especially attracted by the crest of the Cauldron Scope – it rises on the left bank of the Vardaar. The Roman akvudukas are also preserved. The carvings at the Church of the Holy Savior and the Monastery of Moustapha Pasha, built during the reign of the Roman Empire, are noteworthy. Of particular value is the iconostasis of the Church of the Holy Spirit, made of Greek walnut and covered with carved Biblical motifs. In the courtyard of the church is the holy shrine of Göte Delechev.

The shrine of Saint Peter the Baptist is located on the mountain. It offers a beautiful view of the valley from which the city is located. The monastery was founded in the eleventh century, by the ancient ancient Roman Emperor Alexander Komenino. Today it is not a functioning church, but a museum.

You might recommend a visit to Mother Teresas memorial for people of faith. She was born in Scopes in 1910, lived in the city for 18 years, and took her veneration at the Monastery of Yersk. In 1946, she founded the Love Missions, whose purpose was to care for the sick and the homeless around the world.
