Tebessa

Overall Score

2.4

The northeastern and eastern region of Algeria is home to the city of Tebessa, the center of a single province. It is now home to modern mineral fertilizer factories and a silk fabric factory. The city has traditionally developed its own quality of leather. The works of talented craftsmen are renowned far beyond Tebessa.

In the beginning, the city was founded by the Romans as a military camp, and they named it Tevesta. It subsequently became an important trading center. The importance of the Roman and then Byzantine settlements is evidenced by the ruins of the period in the area of Tébassa. Among them, the Triumphal Arc of Caracalla rises. The great monumental structure was erected in the beginning of the 3rd century. In the same century, the Church of Minor was built.

The ancient gate of the citadel, called the Gate of Solomon, is a sight to behold. A measure of the defensive structure still stands 14 square towers from whose windows the soldiers kept a round-the-clock watch over the outskirts and the advance of the enemys forces during the assaults.
