Amalfi – an Italian city by the sea, near the Salerno Gulf in the Salerno province. The city was the capital of the Maritime Republic in the Middle Ages. Amalfi is the heart of the monument of the World Heritage Site of the South Pacific – the Amalfi Coast.

The town is uncommonly picturesque for its location: it sits on the side of the rock face and the houses are joined to each other by crenellations elevated in the rock face, and the roofs are orchards. Everywhere, between these interlacements of houses, scaffolding, lanes, bridges, walkways, an extraordinary beauty of olive, lime and pine trees and vineyard grows.

It is believed that Amalfi was founded by Constantine the Great in the fourth century. At the time of the Languarbirds, it was already a powerful and wealthy society, thanks to the maritime trade. At the head of this community with a republican structure were princes, who were elected for life. At first they were called konsuls, then – grads and finally gerks. Since the ninth century, Amalfi ruled over the ancient lineage of the Hercules, which was initiated by Manzus Fususulus. At the end of his lineage the city was ruled by the king of Salerno, and in 1077 Robert of Guiscaire annexed Amalfi to his dominions (Calabria and Aphulia).

From then on, the city gradually declined, and at one time it counted 50,000 inhabitants, at a time when Amalfi could compete with Pisa and Genoa for the role of the main port of Italy. But the city finally lost its importance after it was destroyed by the Pisans.

The castle was subsequently restored, and from then on it passed from hand to hand from Prince Oreni of Salerno to Antonio Piccolomini, Then to Pope Pius II, and in the seventeenth century to Octavius Piccolomini, but still the city could not regain its former importance.

Today the population is engaged in fishing and fishing. Amalfi produces paper, limoncello brand liqueur and the perfect mackerel.

Amalfe – the cathedral of Saint Andrew, a rare Romanesque church with bronze doors, built in Constantinople around 1065. Here, local residents believe, are the relics of Jesus Christ-Andrew the Firstborn. Above on the slope is the former monastery of the Brännner des Kappuzins 1212

The city of Amalfi – a treasure of beautiful and mysterious Italy.
