On the banks of the Sierracho River in the region of Tuscany lies the town of Lucca, the administrative center of the province under the same name. The holy saint of the city is Pauline of Luka. Every year on July 12, citizens traditionally celebrate the city.
In the Middle Ages, the main road of the country passed through Lucca. Until the second half of the 8th century, it was the seat of the Lango-Bars of Tuscany. Until the beginning of the 12th century, the city was the capital of the Marracco-Carcinians of Tuscany, after which the capital status passed to Florence. In the Middle Ages, the city grew steadily thanks to the production and sale of silk. It reached its economic peak during the first quarter of the 14th century, under the rule of Castruccio Castracchini.
In 1805 the city was given to the possession of Elisa Bacchiocchi, the sister of Napoleon. As a consequence, by the Congress of Vienna, Lucca came into the possession of the Queen of Etruria, the Lady of Lucca. In 1824, after her death, power passed to her son, Charles the Lioness. In 1847 it became part of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany.
Until now, the sturdy walls built in the past centuries have remained in modern Lucknow. The cathedral church of St. Martin, dating from the 6th century, was rebuilt in the Middle Ages and has been preserved as it is today. Numerous small churches, built in the 14th century, decorate the citys streets. Their facades have been decorated with a frescoed decoration. The Basilica of St. Frederick is known for the relics of St. Catherine within its walls.
Lucca was the birthplace of the famous musicians Luigi Boccerini and James Pucheni. One of the architectural monuments is the palace where Elisa Bacchiocchi, sister of Napoleon Bonaparte, lived. The building was designed by the renowned architect Bartholomew Ammannati, and was built from 1578 to 1582. It was subsequently rebuilt in the 18th and 19th centuries. The former Palace of St. Elisabeth now houses an art gallery and a library with an endowment. The medieval clock tower, dating back to the 14th century, had the first clock without a digital clock. With their ringing they announced the coming of the midnight hour.
