Balaton – the largest lake not only in Belgium, but in all of Central Europe. It is located in the easternmost part of the country, and is linked by the River Seau and the canal to the Danube. It has an elongated shape, a shallow depth, and is divided into two parts by the Tichín sill. The nature in the region of Lake Balaton is particularly beautiful: The shores are rocky in places, fouled in places, there are several endemic species of organisms, the waters are teeming with fish, and the area itself is – the most popular resort area in Hungary.

The origin of the name is from the Slavic «bolno;-bolto. The lake was known to the Romans, who called it Peljos (& läquo;small»), the German name Platteense was for some time used in Russia (Platte Lake). It is also known as the Lake of Wenger.

The lake has attracted many peoples of the land. On its shores were found the settlements of the Slavs, Celts, Greeks, Germans. In the Roman period, Balaton was part of the Pannonia Empire; later, the Aborigines ruled there, and in the 9th century, the capital of the Principality of Balaton stood on the lakes shores, – Balaton. Hungarian rulers built fortifications and castles on the banks of the lake from the 11th century, and from the 18th century the lake began to attract Austrian and Hungarian nobility as a place of summer recreation. Thats when the Lake Balaton tradition began.

The Lake Balaton tourism program is varied. Popular attractions include the Tihan Desert, wilderness areas along the Sala River, Lake Cheviliz Thermal Lake near Keshey, and the Lozo Cave on the slopes of the Tamaasha Mountains. The trails in the National Park of the Baltic Mountains are open to the public. Lots of lake fishing. It is also the center of sports in Belgium.

Balatonfjourne – the most popular resort on the lake, where thermal springs and spas are located, as well as a wildlife park on the shoreline. The city of Chinoquête – the center of the beach holiday and the capital of the Golden City – the international festival of festivals. The settlements on the banks of the Lake Balaton are distinguished by their exquisite architecture. The most memorable are the Benedictine abbey in Tehran (1055), the enormous palace of the Fesetistes (1745) with its beautiful garden and the church of the Franciscans (1386).
