Benghazi has a warm semi-arid climate with hot and dry, prolonged summers and mild to cool, slightly wet winters. In the north of the city lies the Mediterranean-climate ‘Jabal Al-Akhdar’ (Green Mountains), and in the south the climate is becoming desert-like. Summers in Benghazi are hot and rainless, but with high levels of humidity. Winters are mild with occasional rain. Annual rainfall is low at 270 mm (11 in) per year. The city’s local water supply is supplemented by groundwater transported from the aquifers of southern Libya along the Great Manmade River.
