On the Gulf coast of the Western African country of Côte dIvoire, the town of Abidjan, the administrative center of a single department, has opened in the West African country of Côte dIvoire. It occupies an area of 4 levees on the banks of the River Ebury and is an important seaport. It is home to an international airport. The largest oil refinery in Western Africa is in Abidjan. Food and light industries are also developed.

The citys name in Abidjan means Quot;cut leaves" and is symbolic of an end to inter-ethnic conflicts. Abidjan is located in a sub-oceanic climate zone. There is a rainy season from May through July and through October and November. Dry periods last from March through April and August through August. January is considered the driest month, while July is the wettest. The air temperature is influenced by the winds blowing from the Gulf of Mexico during the summer and by the hot air masses from the Sahara Desert during the winter. Initially a small village in 1934, it became the center of the French Border of the Ivory Coast. It was the center of the country until 1983, after independence. Although it has lost its official capital status, Abidjan continues to be a major industrial and cultural center of the country.

In 1980, Italian architect Antonio Spierito designed a cathedral to be built in the city. In August 1985, construction was completed. The cathedral was consecrated by John Paul II. The interior of the building is decorated with colorful decorations. A tower rises above the building. The Cathedral of Mary was opened in February 1987. The windows of the church have an altarpiece depicting the Biblical scenes and the Virgin Mary. The sculptures are made of wood. They were designed by local sculptor Ciaca Culibaly.

Many local places and attractions are in the city today, including the Palace of Culture and the Monument of Liberation, which was opened in 1960. There are several museums: the Armory, the Museum of Modern Art, the National Museum, the National Museum, the National Museum of Côte dIvoire and the Cahiers Theater.
