Bar

On the western borders of the Vinnytsia River there is a small town called Barar – the district administrative center. The area and surroundings of the bar have long been inhabited by people, dating back to the period of Tripolitan culture (5-3 thousand years before our time). It was home to Scythians, Sarmatians, and ancient Slavs of Ulit, as evidenced by the numerous archaeological finds and research.

Bar was originally founded in the 14th and 15th centuries as a fortification of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The settlement is supposedly the location of the Slavic town of Bozhsky, which was obliterated by the Mongolian Tatars. In the 1630s, the famous French engineer Boplan built a stone castle in place of the wooden castle. Today, the castles ruins – one of Bárs main attractions – are in a state of disrepair.

The city has endured many changes of power and wars. Of cultural heritage, the Monastery of the Camelites (1616, now Pokrovsky Womens Monastery), the Unpretentious Church of St. Anne (1811), as well as several other cultural buildings from the 17th and 18th centuries have survived to this day. The bar is adorned with memorials to soldiers of various wars and cultural figures, and there is an ethnic and ethnographic museum.
