Belize City

Overall Score

2.9

Belize City – the largest city and the main port of Belize. It is located on a semicircular cape on the banks of a single river.

The territory of the town is in a rough terrain, so the first settlers (they were English sailors) in the 17th century had to hunt the land down, drying out large areas. For a long time, Belize was the main city of the Brittany-Honduras cluster, but after a catastrophe caused by Hurricane Haiti (1961), the city was moved further inland. But Bilize City is the most popular city and the most visible landmark in the country.

Bilize City is a quiet and colorful place. Most of the buildings are one- and two-story, painted in bright colors, and the streets are trompe loeil. The highlights of Belize include the St. Johns Anglican Church (1847), the Old Prison (now the Belize Museum), the Maritime Museum (dedicated to the maritime industry), and the Museum of the Land (dedicated to the reefs). Belize Park, which features mostly native species of animals, is about 50 kilometers southwest of the city.
