Dakar – the capital of Senegal, the largest city in the country, its economic and cultural center. Dhakar is located on the Green Cape, which is the westernmost point of Africa. Accordingly, Dhakar – is the most western city on the continent. The capital city of Senegal has a sub-oceanic climate with a distinctly dry season (May-June) and a short season of rain. Saharas balmy weather is softened by the sea breezes of the Atlantic, making Dacara – a pleasant place to live.

It is well known that Finnish ships reached the Green Cape, and among European explorers, the first to discover the Green Cape was the Portsugal captain Dinis Dyasch in 1444. In fact, Dakar appeared much later, in 1857. It was founded by the French colonists as a transit port and stronghold of the French colonization in Africa. The advantageous strategic location ensured the rapid growth and prosperity of Dakar. In 1904 Dakar became the administrative center of all the French possessions in Western Africa, and in 1960, with the proclamation of the independence of Senegal, it became a city state. The distinctive feature of Senegals capital is its architectural complexity. Here are the countrys most important Islamic churches, characterized by their uniqueness of form and splendor. These include the Cathedral Church (1964), where foreigners are forbidden to enter, the magnificent Dakar Church, and the Oukakama Church. On the shores of the Atlantic Ocean stands the snow-colored Palace of the Presidents (1906), and in Independence Square stands the tallest statue of Africa – A monument to the Aphrican Renaissance (2010), commemorating the 50th anniversary of Senegals independence.

The Museum of African Art – the countrys largest museum and one of the oldest of its kind in Africa. The Dakar Theater – a beautifully decorated building that hosts some of the countrys largest concerts. Local music can be heard at the Sandaga Food Market.

Dakar is known to sports fans through the Paradise-Dakar International Festival & Paradise-Dakar. The city was the final point of the race, and the champions were celebrated there. The rally was held every year from 1979 to 2007.
