In Western Africa, the city of Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone, is the economic and political center of the country. The citys territory is divided administratively into three regions. The poorest and most densely populated area is the eastern one. The Western has great beaches with gambling facilities, comfortable hotels and fancy restaurants, and the cabanas and cottages of the wealthy and affluent. The Central District is mostly occupied by companies and firms, governmental organizations and institutions.

The citys economy is largely based on the port. Its coastline is one of the worlds largest deep-water ports. ×A fraction of citizens are involved in the manufacture of shoes, clothing, cigarettes, the trade in uncut diamonds, and the processing of sea food and food products.

The present day Fountain and the surrounding area are dominated by a monsoonal tropical climate. It rains heavily from May through October. During the summer, winds blowing in from the Atlantic bring rain and coolness with them to the capital. The dry wind from Sakharan brings the heat with it in the winter season.

The bulk of the citizens are dark-skinned. There are large groups of Arabs, Chinese, and white people. The language used is Crio. English is used for business purposes. A smaller number of citizens are members of the Christian religion. About 60 percent are Muslim ascetics.

Transportation within the city is by taxis and mini-buses. Intercity routes linking the capital with major cities and towns in the country are served by buses. There is an air port 20 kilometers from the capital, on the opposite side of the Gulf. Citizens and citizens can get to the harbor by boat or ferry.

The land of the present city was home to a market of invertebrates, who were taken to the pantries in New World after they had been purchased. More than 400 former slaves who had gained their freedom came here in 1787. For their part in the American War of Independence, the ex-prisoners were rewarded with freedom from slavery. The official year of the citys founding is 1792.
