Limassol

Overall Score

3.7

South of Cyprus is the city of Limassol, a major financial, cultural and economic center. Its territory extends along the coastline of the Acrocreri Gulf. The second largest city in the country is in the area between the ancient cities of Matatus and Curérion. In former times, the Nazarenes called it Neapolis, which means New City. From the center of todays Laemassol to Amatous, the coastal road is a coastal resort area. After Nicaquisia, it is the countrys second most important port. It is believed that the city was founded by Richard the Lionheart, who also destroyed the kingdom of Amatatus during the same period. These events took place in the 12th century.

In archaeological research, experts have found objects dating back to 2,000 years ago, which supports the hypothesis that the site was inhabited in ancient times. Previously, the area where the present city now stands belonged to the French Empire. Consequently, the Crusaders took over. Then came the French, followed by the Turks, and then the English.

For a long period of time, the land has been farmed. Local people were engaged in wine-growing. The word about their wines has spread far beyond Kiprus. The city reached its heyday under the Anglo-Americans. In the early 20th century, it was transformed from a small village into a large business center. The citys streets were filled with tall buildings and structures. Today, almost half of the companies in Cyprus are registered in Limassol. As they have for centuries, the land around the city continues to produce excellent harvests of vegetables and fruits.

The modern city stretches along the coastline, occupying nearly 15 kilometers of coastal land that is divided into three tourist areas. Each of them has numerous entertainment centers, restaurants, bars, hotels, and recreational facilities. The beaches offer a wealth of sea activities and sports for tourists, including diving. The historic museum, housed in a medieval castle, is an eye-catcher. The traditional wine festival takes place every year in September and lasts for 10 days.
