The main city of the Venezuelan state of Aragua — Maracay is the commercial and agricultural center. It is only 25 kilometers from the Caribbean Sea. The city is separated from the coast by a railway gate. It has a warm climate, and there is no winter at all because it is so close to the equator.

Maracas is a major producer of coffee and cacao, sugarcane, and tobacco. The population is also engaged in livestock farming and horticulture. There are textile, paper and perfume factories.

Maracay became a city in 1701. The first settlement was established a few years later by priest de Banhuis Szotomayor. It is believed that the city is named after the Indian lord Maracaquayo. However, it is thought that the name comes from the name of a mellow tree called mara.

In Maracay, a monument to the yagooru, erected to commemorate the symbol of the Maracay Indians, was erected in the city of Maracay.  Among the citys notable features are the Museum of Anthropology, the Triumphal Arch, and the Museum of the Homies. There is also the Museum of Modern Art & Mario Antonio Antonio.
