Poznan is located on the Varta River and is the administrative center of the Polish Army, located in the west of the country.
Poznan is one of the earliest cities of Greater Poland – an historically important region in western Poland, which was the center of education in the Polish state.
According to archaeological data, in the 10th-13th centuries there were two settlements in present-day Poland: the Episcopacy on the island of Tumsky and the Old City. In the 13th century, these areas were united and the city of Poznan was formed. This city became an important European trade center, and transport and trade routes passed through it. In the late 18th century, the Principality of Pruzhskoye was part of the Kingdom of Prussia. The inhabitants of this region repeatedly tried to gain independence from the Germans, but only after the 1918 Bolshevik Rebellion of Poland did the principality rejoin the Polish state. In 1939, Poland was seized by the Germans and joined the Reich. It was liberated by the Soviets on 23 February 1945.
One of the citys main attractions is the Fortress of Knowledge. It is a whole architectural complex that was built at the end of the 19th century. The fortress has a quarter and a ring of 18 fortifications and various auxiliary structures. During the occupation of the country by the Germans, a concentration camp was located in one of the ports. Today it is the site of the Museum of the Martyrs of the Great Poland Fort VII;.
The Old Market is in the center of the city. The market square is home to one of the citys main tourist attractions &nash; the Tourist Museum, which currently houses the Museum of the History of Knowledge. The Rathaus was built in the 13th century, and has been repeatedly rebuilt since then. Every day at noon, lots of people gather around the patio: a small door in one of the towers near the clock opens and two wandering goats emerge.
In 1923, a memorial was erected in the St. Stanislaus Monnjuska Park to the great composer, Henry Schönen. In 1939 the monument was dismantled and taken away from the Germans who had occupied the city. In 1961 it was installed in the Chapin Park.
