Road Town

Overall Score

3.5

On the island of Tortola, the capital city of the Brittany Islands, Rough Town, is the capital center of the Brittany Islands. Its territory lies near the headland of Rhode Harbor and occupies the middle of the southern coastline of the island. The origin of the name of the capital is related to the place of the anchorage of the seaport. Rhode Town is among the most ancient architectural structures in the Caribbean Basin.

The oldest building in the capital is the former Coronel Prison, built in the 1940s in the 19th century. The structure rises on the main street in the capital, Main Street, which is home to a number of other historic landmarks, in particular an 1840 church and an 18th-century post office building. A small National Museum was built in 1983.

On the opposite side of the cove rises the Fort George Fort. Many shopping centers and entertainment venues are located in the town of Okeekes Caye. The main part of the central part of the city is occupied by the ONeill Garden, which opened in 1986. Subsequently, the natural areas were consolidated into the National Park of the Tawny Mountains.
