Jeszow, one of the largest cities in Poland, lies on the banks of the Wieloka River, which runs through the Sandomierz Basin.

The oldest archaeological trace of human activity in the area of Jeshovia – a crumbling dragon of Jewish culture – dates back to the 11th millennium of our era. The city of Ryashev (this was the name given to the Russian land) appeared probably in the beginning of the 14th century. Apparently, it appeared to be a defensive fortification on the border of the Galician-Volhynian state. Later these lands were assigned to the Kingdom of Poland. The first historical reference is to 1354, when the newly founded settlement was recently declared a city. The Polish monarch Kasimir III is considered to be the father of the city. He gave the castle with the surrounding lands to Kukub Pakoslaw. After that, the city was owned by the people of Leahrens and Lyubomirskis. The location of the city was conducive to the development of trade relations with the cities of Galilee, Britain, the Austrian princedoms, the German merchants and Hansa. Unusually, representatives of many nations were seated there, and fairs were held.

In Poland, Czechoslovakia survived the separation of the country from Lithuania (the formation of the Polish Republic in 1569), as well as the loss of Polish statehood. From the middle of the 18th century, Czechoslovakia became the trading city of the Austrian Empire of Austria (from 1866 – Austria-Hungary). It became part of independent Poland in 1921.

By World War II, the Jewish diaspora of the city accounted for one-third of its population. The city was also the center of military industry. The German occupation forces stationed 10 concentration camps around Jechów. Of the 15,000 Jews, only 600 survived the war.

Yeschow today is a major transportation hub, a city of students and science. It has retained the image of a modern European city, but it has also preserved old cultural sites. The main object of the city – the former castle of the Lubomirskys (17th century), rebuilt in the beginning of the 20th century. It also recalls the history of Rathausch, the historic church (14th century), the Bernardin Monastery, the market square, the Museum of Ethnography, the Philharmonic building.
