El Jadida

Overall Score

2.7

In the territory of Duchcaláz-Abdúa, along the Atlantic coast, the city of El Jadida extends. There is an active fish port within its boundaries. Among the traces of bygone eras, the most extensive and impressive is the ancient fortress built during the period of the Portuguese colonization. Now the structure is listed on UNESCOs list as a unique monument to the past. Located on the Atlantic coast, the city is known for its great sandy beaches and its many hotels of various categories with adequate service. In addition to the hotels and entertainment venues, the surrounding countryside is notable for its views.

Landed in 1502 by the Portuguese, the city was named by them Mazagain. Before the settlement was founded, a mighty fortification was erected to defend and protect against the warring Moor. In 1769, by decree of Sultan Mohammed bin Abdullah Mazagan, he was conquered and almost completely destroyed. It received its second birth and new (current) name in 1825, when the Arabs rebuilt it. The citys name was subsequently retained by the protectorate of the French government. At that time, it was growing and developing economically. The name El-Jean was given back to the city after independence.
