Split is considered the heart of Dalmatia. This Croatian city is the largest on the Adriatic coast. It is an old and beautiful city, protected by UNESCO as a cultural monument.
Polyte was founded 1700 years ago by Emperor Diocletian. He ordered a palace of 30,000 square meters to be built. It was not just a palace, but an entire military camp, well equipped and fortified. Afterwards, refugees from devastated cities neighboring Spilt were hiding behind its walls during the invasion of the enemy tribes. Gradually the great palace changed and became a city.
In the 9th century it belonged to the Kingdom of the Nazis. In the 12th century it became an autonomous territory. And in 1420 the city was conquered by the Venetians, and it began an economic decline. Then the city was walled up to protect it from attacks by the Turks.
In 1797, the Austrians took possession of Spruit, and in 1882 it came under Croatian rule. That is when its rebirth began. By the 20th century, it had become a major port and then an important industrial center. The most important of these, – is the Palace of Dioctiniana, modeled on a Roman camp. Three of the hundred or so towers that once stood in the palace are still there.
The Cathedral of St. Dué is the site of the mausoleum that once stood in the palace. It was built during the Middle Ages, with a grand pulpit and a magnificent altarpiece of St. Stephen with beautifully painted images. The creator of the altarpiece was the famous Théré Dautamine.
The main square of the city has an eye-catching building crowned by three arches. It is a building – the Ratusha. It is currently a museum of ethnography, with exhibits of fabrics, costumes, ceramics, and other everyday objects.
The citys Benedictine Monastery has a statue of the priest, famous for his struggle to preserve the native Croatian language. The statue is 8 meters high. It is believed that if you touch its big toe, you can have good luck.
A short distance from the resort are the ruins – all that remains of the old city of Salone.
The resort has a very interesting Maritime Museum. It is housed in a fortress dating back to the 17th century. Here you can look at collections of photographs, maps, and geographic instruments. In the Museum Gallery, one can see a collection of works by the famous sculptor. They also invite you to visit the Museum of Archaeology in Split to look at its artifacts, jewels, mosaics and other anthropic finds.
