Portimão has a hot-summer mediterranean climate with hot dry summers and mild wet winters moderated by the Atlantic Ocean. The lowest temperature the city has ever experienced was −2 °C (28 °F) on January 1976. Along with other municipalities in the Algarve, Portimão is unsurprisingly very sunny, averaging over 3100 hours of sunhine a year. The average sea temperature is around 16 °C (61 °F) in winter and 20 to 21 °C (68 to 70 °F) in the summer.
