Ponta Delgada, Azores

Overall Score

3.7

The city and seaport of Ponta Delgado lies on the island of Azores, San Miguel, and is the capital of the island. The citys streets are decorated with ancient churches, monasteries, and houses in the colonial style of a bygone era. They are silent witnesses to the events of times past. Once upon a time, long ago, Pointa Delgado was an important port on the way from Europe to the New World and back. In those distant times, geographic discoveries woke up the world. Over time, the village became a thriving city. It became the capital center of the island in 1522. To protect against the attacks of the crusaders, fortifications were built in the city. The period of prosperity for Ponta Delgado was the 18th and 19th centuries. During that time, the streets were filled with new buildings and markets. Several foreign companies have established themselves here, exporting agricultural products, in particular bananas, pineapples and cucumbers. The City Yacht Club is the oldest sporting institution on the Azores. In 2001, he celebrated his 100th birthday. The harbor is always full of boats and yachts. Cruisers often approach the islands coastline, with passengers exploring the wonders of the city.
