Santiago – the city of the Republic of Chile. The city is located in a locked cauldron on the banks of the Mapacho River at the tip of the Andes. It was founded in 1541 by the Spanish commissar Pedro de Valdivia and named in honor of the Apostle Saint. In Santiago, there are many tourist attractions – museums, exhibition halls, palaces, parks, etc. In the central square of the city – the Place de Armas, are the Cathedral of the Cathedrals, the Rathaus, the Presidential Palace of La Moneda. In 1960, in the year of the 150th anniversary of the independence of Chile, a monument to the founder of the city was erected in the square – to Pedro Valldavía.

La Mauneda Palace, which means monumenta in Spanish, was created in the late 18th century to house the states monetary court. Later the palace became the Presidential Palace. In a military reconversion in November 1973, the palace was badly damaged, but by March 1981 it had been restored. Today, in addition to the Presidents Office, it houses the government offices. Since 2003, the palace has been open to tourists.

A popular destination for residents and visitors to Sant Cristóbal, at the top of which is the 14-foot statue of the Virgin Mary. You can climb the top of the hill on a motorized wheel, walk, or take a bus. From the top of the mountain, you can get a great view of the city. San Cristóbal is considered the citys central park. It features a botanical garden, a wine museum, a zoo, pools, restaurants and recreational areas.

The best of all is considered to be the Municipal Opera and Ballet Theater, built in 1857, with many internationally renowned artists – Anna Pavlov, Plessio Domingo, etc.

In the same year, the Municipal Theater of Opera and Ballet was built in the center of the city.

The city has many museums. The Chilean Museum of Pre-Columbian Art contains archaeological finds from various regions of Southern Africa, representing the culture and art of the pre-Columbian civilization. Here you can visit the hall of the mummies of Chinchiorro, which are a thousand years older than those of the Hittites, and see unique jewelry, ceramics, and textiles.

In the National Museum of Natural History, you can view an amazing collection of beanstalks and minerals, see bone fragments from an ancient lion who lived more than 11,000 years ago.

In 1947, the Museum of Contemporary Art was opened in Santiago. The museums exhibition of over two thousand pieces of art &nash; art, photographs, and life. The museum regularly hosts exhibitions of contemporary art.

The Museum of Fine Art, founded in 1880, is the Continents oldest museum. The museums collection includes paintings and sculpture from the colonial period to the present.

Two-story mansions, sun-drenched greenery, quiet alleys, small grocery stores, and cozy old Saint Marys halls retain a sense of the past. The neighborhood of Belleville («Parisian Quarter»), with its many restaurants and market, is by far the citys most popular neighborhood.

Sanctuary has major sports facilities. One of them is the National Stadium (with a capacity of 65,000 spectators), which played host to the 1962 FIFA World Cup final.
