Brašov – one of the largest cities in Romania, located almost in the geographical center of the country. It is located in the northernmost part of the Southern Mountains, in the historical area known as the Barra Birszei. It was founded as Craninostadt, and is referred to in historical documents as Brasso, Brasco, Stefanonopolis, and Brárachov. In 1950-60, it was named in honor of Stalin – Oraschul-Stalin.
The city owes its name to the Teutonic Knights. In 1211, they laid the castle of Krohnstattadt and were the first Transylvanian Saxons in the region. Waves of German immigrants came to Brášov and the surrounding countryside at the behest of the Hungarian monarch to exploit the mineral resources and fortify the borders. The city played an important role in the cultural life of the country. Here, in 1535, the first printing house opened, the first book in the Romanian language was published, in 1559, one of the oldest Romanian schools was opened.
The architectural design of Borašov was strongly influenced by the German school. The German city of St. Bartholomew is often referred to as the old quarters in the historic center of St. Bartholomew. The most significant features are the oldest building in Bárášov – St. Bartholomews Church (1223), the elaborate St. Nicholas Church (1292), the Ectopius Gate (1539), and the Chukka (1828). The street of Strada Sofia (16th century) is considered the narrowest in Romania (111 centimeters) and one of the narrowest in Europe. The symbol of the city – the Church of Mary the Mother of God, or the Black Church (1380). Its name is derived from the fact that it was blackened after a fire in 1689.
Baruchov remains the cultural center of Romania, with several museums and institutions, cultural and recreational facilities. The most interesting things are the places around Borašov: The famous «Sunny Springfield» or Poyana-Brachov – A great ski resort with an extensive tourist program, the fortress of the town of Ryshynov (1215), famous for its legends, the ruinous German castles of Peljesz (1914) and Peljeszor (1903), and the 14th-century Romanian castle of Baran, one of the memorable places of the Count of Dracula, a gift of Vladislav Cepesz.
