The Cossack city of Cossacks was founded in the area of the Bachlue River, on the site of the most important trade routes. It is first mentioned in the Chronicles in 1408, although it appears to have been founded earlier. Despite its small size, it will become an important political and economic city. In roughly the second half of the sixteenth century, it was the capital of the Kingdom of Moldova, one of the most important states in Eastern Europe. Not far from Yass, the Polish army was defeated by the Turks in 1620. As Russias role in the region increased, the Moldovan king pledged his allegiance to Peter I. This event took place in Rossy in 1711. The city was often settled by different colonies, and it repeatedly changed hands during the incessant Russo-Turkish wars. As a result, the city became the place where the Pridonie Princedoms were founded and the city became the foundation of Romania. In World War I, the Romanian government moved to Yassy. The reason for this – the extremely unsuccessful actions on the front and the actual disintegration of the Romanian army. In 1944 Jassy was the scene of a grand battle, one of «s ten Stalinist strikes against the Germans. In the course of the attack large German forces were routed and defeated, and a revolution took place in Germany, leading to a change of course and the withdrawal of Romania from the war. The cellars were damaged in the operation, but they were restored rather quickly.

An interesting fact in the history of the city was the creation of the first Jewish theater to perform plays in iddish. This institution was very important for a culture that was traditionally prominent in the Christian countries. Most of the survivors of World War II went to Israel as a consequence. The Palace of Culture, built in a nasty style before World War I, stands out. It was built for the rulers of Romania, and by legend it had 365 rooms – for every day of the year. In addition to the palace, there are several churches in Yassy, among which the Basilica of the Three Hierarchs, built in the 17th century, stands out.
