Marcelles – the oldest French city. It was founded by the Franco-Caucasian Greeks around 600 A.D. and was called Massalia. The citys advantageous location led to its prosperity, and gradually Massalia became a major trading center and established commercial sites all along the Middle Sea. This was also facilitated by the fact that Massalia was an ally of the Roman Empire and frequently sought protection from local tribes.
