The modern complex includes a church and an open market, the roof of which is similar in its outline to the carpet on which the male heroine died.
The modern town of Van is an industrial center that has developed textile industries. The river port, which harbors seagoing vessels, is operating successfully. The area is home to metallurgy and mechanical engineering, chemical, petroleum refining, and paper industries. Museums are open, in particular those of fine art, natural history, anthropology, ceramics and the maritime museum.
