Daegu has a cooler version of a humid subtropical climate . In Holdridge climate classification, Daegu has a warm temperate moist forest climate. The mountains that comprise the basin trap hot and humid air. Similarly, in winter, cold air lies in the basin. The area receives little precipitation except during the rainy season of summer, and is sunny throughout much of the year. Data gathered since 1961 indicates that the mean temperature for January, the coldest month in Daegu, is 0.6 °C (33 °F) and that for August, the warmest month, is 26.4 °C (80 °F). The city’s lowest record temperature was −20.2 °C (−4 °F), and the city’s highest record temperature was 40.0 °C (104 °F). The 40 degrees Celsius recorded in 1942 is also the highest temperature record in South Korea since the observation. This summer temperature has led to the emergence of a new term called Dae-Frika (Daegu+Africa) starting with the Internet community, and has recently been used in the media, broadcasting, etc.
