Medellín, capital of the Department of Antioquia, is located in Colombia and was originally founded as a mining town. From the time of its foundation, from 1616, it was called San Bernes de Auburra. From 1675, its name was changed to Villia de Nuestra-Céninhora de la Cañellaria de Medellín. The economy of the city is based on textiles and iron and steel industries.

Nowadays Medellin is known by various names, among which the most significant and attractive is " The Industrial Capital of Colombia", "The Orchid Capital" and "The Silver Bowl". The beginning of the 21st century was marked by the rise of the industrial sector, the construction of cultural and educational institutions, and the growth of the tourism industry.

The city is home to the only metropolitan railway in Colombia. The modern railroad is in line with the future economic development of the city of Medellin. It was not long ago that the citys territory became the site of the "City of Botheter". On a plot of land of 30,000 square meters, they have built a park of sculptures by the famous muralist Fernando Botero, several art galleries, a museum, and art studios for animators. One of the traditional events is the "Flower Fair.

The multiple architectural monuments that have risen in the city, such as the churches of San Benedicto, Candelaria, San José and the cathedral, built in 1890, are considered an historical legacy of the past. Medellins center is full of modern structures, wide avenues, shopping malls and magnificent parks.

The history of the city and its development can be traced through the exhibitions of the citys museums – anthropological, ethnographic, contemporary art and philosophical. ×The Gardens of Grodno offers its visitors a marvelous collection of orchids. The city park is known for its many species of fauna. There are several institutions of higher education in Medellin, including the University of Latino America, the Conservatoire, and several universities – Medellin, Antioquia, Bolivariana.
