Yogyakarta is a city on the island of Java in Indonesia. It is the administrative center of the Special District of Yogyakarta. The city is known as a center for classical Javanese fine arts and culture, particularly batik, ballet, drama, music, poetry, and puppet shows. Yogyakarta was the capital of Indonesia from 1946 to 1948, during the Indonesian Revolution. One of the districts of modern Yogyakarta, Kotagede, was the capital of the sultanate of Mataram from 1575 to 1640. The city was named after the Indian city of Ayodhya from the epic Ramayana. “Yogya” (Jogya) means “fit, proper,” “karta” means “prosperous, prosperous,” that is, the city’s name can be translated as “city fit to prosper.”
