Novocherkassk is proud to stand proudly on a steep and rugged ridge between the Akka and Tuzla rivers, emblematic even of its very location as a Cossack stronghold and liberty. The history of Novocherkassk is not unlike the history of the Don Cossacks as a whole. As is well known, the Young Folk have never had a strong independence and have been a reliable backbone of the country, able to provide in a short time the armed and combat-ready units to defend it.
The history of modern Nova Cerkerkanka is unique and unparalleled. It can only be compared to Petersburg. It was the future capital of the Don Cossacks, designed by Devallon, in the best European traditions, with wide streets and boulevards, spacious squares with an uninterrupted church, and plenty of greenery. Novocherkassk was laid on May 18 (30), 1805. Its founder and the first ataman was Matvei Matatov, the future hero of the Great Patriotic War in 1812, who led the Cossack regiments to the walls of Paris. His memory is commemorated in a number of monuments by his contemporaries. In the post-revolutionary period, the city repeatedly changed hands and became the center of the white movement. The Moscow locals of Novocherkassk remember well both the clanking of the coats of arms and the soldiers of the White Guard. In January 1920, the city finally passed into the hands of the Bolsheviks and became the district center. Beginning in 1991, the process of rebirth of Novocherkassk as the historical and modern center of the Don Cossacks began, and in 1993 it was proclaimed the World Capital of Cossacks.
In spite of a very difficult history, the occupation during the years of World War II, Novocherkassk managed to preserve the historic center of the city as it existed in the 19th century to this day. Because of this, it can rightly be counted among the cities – museums. It is full of a variety of cathedrals and churches, all in excellent condition, and monuments to its famous landmarks. Among them stands out the monument to John Ataman Yermak Tiemeyevich, made according to the design of the famous sculptor Mikaheshin. Many prominent writers have been associated with Novocherkassk, with Mikhail Sholokhov as the leading figure among them.
Nowadays Novocherkassk is the industrial and cultural center of the region, it has a large number of museums, universities, various stadiums and sports palaces, drama theater.
