Nizhny Novgorod – founded in the 13th century at the confluence of two rivers, the Oka and the Volga, is a city that has preserved its timeless spirit to this day.

The citys main attraction is the Kremlin of Nizhny Novgorod, which is rightfully considered to be the most magnificent and grandiose medieval fortress in central Russia to this day. In its time, Kremlin was one of the outstanding engineering and fortification structures, and in terms of height difference between its halves it is unparalleled in the world. Originally built of wood, it was rebuilt, first of stone and later of brick, and acquired its present form in the 16th century. Today the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin – is a monumental structure with two kilometers of solid walls and thirteen towers, reaching a height of ten feet, with its own names, purpose and history. Currently, the Museum of Military Equipment is in operation at the Cemetery.

An equally interesting historical feature of the city is the Nizhny Novgorod Fair, which has become famous not only in Russia, but also in Western Europe. At present, the Nizhny Novgorod Fair has exhibition halls and conference halls, of which the Trade Fair stands out, where international and national economic and industrial forums are held. There are also exhibitions of decorative and fictional art, sculpture and painting. Visiting the Nizhny Novgorod Fair, one should pay attention to the Cathedral of the Transfiguration, located on its territory. Designed by Augustus R. Mognonoret. Mounonferrand – the architect who built the Isakievsky Cathedral in St. Petersburg, it is very similar to this one. The cathedral holds the relics of the citys founder – Grand Duke Grigory Vsevolodovich, Grand Duke Alexander Nevsky and the Most Reverend St. Seraphim of Sarsk.

One of the oldest churches in Nizhny Novgorod is the Church of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist. During the time of turmoil, Kozyma Minin called on the capital of Moscow to liberate the capital from the Polish protesters. Initially wooden, the stone church was built in the 18th century on the initiative and at the expense of the priest Drynichnikov, but it has not been preserved in its original form to this day, having been destroyed by the Bolsheviks.

You should also visit the Cathedral of Alexander Nevsky in Novgorod. It is a beautiful and tall building, built at the request and expense of the Nizhny Novgorod merchants. Unfortunately, as a result of the fire, the rich interior decoration and the beautiful painting of the cathedral were completely destroyed, and the restoration, which began in 1983, is still underway.

When youve been to Nizhny Novgorod, you cant miss the beauty of the Monastery of Pechyessen, which is unprecedented. Founded in the 14th century, this ancient monastery was a foster home whose monks and worshippers were forbidden to own or trespass on its walls without receiving a grant of gratitude. Currently, the Museum of the Nizhny Novgorod Archdiocese is located at the Monastery.

In addition to those listed above, the Cathedral of the Most Holy Mother of God, the Cathedral of the Transfiguration of the Savior and the St. Marks Chapel are also worth visiting in Novgorod, ×The Kokkalev Ladder and the Monument to Minin and Pozharsky, as well as the streets of Ilyin and Bolshaya Pokrovska.

The legendary land of Nizhny Novgorod, which is the birthplace of the Kokhloma painting and of Nizhny Novgorods army, is remarkable for its spiritual richness and beauty. Traveling through it will bring unforgettable experiences.
