Obinsky, located in Kaluga, on the banks of the River Protiva, is the first scientific city in Russia.

Obinskys history dates back to 1588 – 1589. It is from this period that the first written records of the villages of Balkkino, Pyatkino, and Sampsonovo, which are now part of the city, are recorded.

The owners of the village of Belykino, beginning in the 15th century, were a family of Belykino noblemen. At the end of the XVI century the estate passed into the ownership of the family of Gaudonovs, and in 1741 the village of Byelkina belonged to the Voronovs. He built a house, a church, and a linden park in the village, which have remained to this day. Later, the Belkino estate passed to the inheritance of I.I. Voroninovs granddaughter – Anna, who became the wife of D.P. Boutourlin. In 1817 the family of Bouturlinny went to Italy for permanent residence, and they rented their estate in the village of Belkino to I.A. Kavitsky, whose daughter married Colonel N.A. Obninskoy. On his retirement, the colonel bought the villages of Samsonov and Chemyakino, and in 1840 he acquired the estate of Belokino.

After the end of the World War II, a secret object – Laboratory «B» was built in this area, on the basis of which the Physics and Energy Institute will be opened in the future. The laboratory conducted research in the field of nuclear physics. For this purpose they invited the best Soviet specialists, as well as German experimental engineers. The result of this research was the construction of the worlds first nuclear power plant, which was opened on June 27, 1954. Obninsk began to develop as a scientific city that conducted research in nuclear physics, atomic energy, radiation science, meteorology, geophysics and radiation chemistry. The worlds first electrical atomic station, built in Obninsk, is now an experimental and research base and the main attraction of the city, where excursions are organized.

The Boughra estate, which in the early 20th century was the home of the artist P.P. Kotchulsky, has been preserved in Obninsk. Konchalovsky. To the northwest of the city is the Belokino estate, where the church of Boris and Gabriel, built in 1773, is located.

The citys most prominent feature is a 310-meter high meteorological tower, part of the ITPO &Laquo;TAIÓN» meteorological complex.

In the 1940s, German designers designed by the German architects built the most beautiful part of the city, called Old Town. Here are the main monuments of the citys architecture, chief among them the Church of the Nativity of Christ and the Old Water Tower, the use of which is forbidden for commercial purposes.

The Museum of Natural History in Obninsk has a large museum that contains exhibits on the history of science.
