Ulyyanyansk, the administrative center of the Ulyanovsk region, is located at the maximum confluence of two rivers – the Volga and the Svyatoya. Initially, the city was founded as a fortress of Cínbířířsk, by decree of Alexander Miyakyevich Khitrovs father Boris Matveyevich in 1648. The purpose of the city was to protect the eastern borders of Muscovy from the invasion of a large number of nomads. Subsequently, it was renamed Semimirsk.

With the expansion of the Russian Empires border in the 18th and 19th centuries, Semimirsk changed from a fortress city to a city with a well-developed infrastructure. It is also the hometown of Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov (Lenin), after which it became famous. On that occasion, on May 9, 1924, the former city of Siberia was changed to Ulyanovsk.

Museums in Ulyanovsk are numerous and all contribute harmoniously to the modern culture and archaeological life of the city. The historic value of many museums in Olyolyanovsk has its roots deep in the past. It was at that time that the scientists and collectors of Cimiberia accumulated and gave the city a great cultural and scientific legacy.

In 2005, two prominent regional museums celebrated their 110th anniversary, – the Museum of Local History and the Museum of Art. They are the most beloved and well-known museums of the local population and visitors to the city. They collect and present the history of the region – from its founding to the present day.

In 2004, the State Historical and Memorial Reserve celebrated its 20th anniversary, which is a major landmark and pride of Ulyanovsk. Because many people, from local people to visiting tourists, including foreigners, are eager to stroll through the «s Open Sky Museum and travel back to the distant times of Siberia in the nineteenth century.

Also in Ulyanovsk, opened on November 2, 1941, the Museum Museum of Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov (Lenin) with an unique exhibition. The museum completely reveals the areas of Vladimir Lenins activity and his place in the history of Russia in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
