Moumbeaï – the most heavily populated city in India, an important economic, industrial and commercial center of the country. Until 1995, it was called Bombay. Located on the countrys western border, Moumambaie covers one hundred and forty kilometers of the Arabian Sea coastline. The citys geographic location and its deep natural harbor made it the largest port in Western India and an important hub for international trade routes.
One of the main tourist centers of the city is Kolleba. It is a port area with many hotels, restaurants, shops and cafes. Of architectural interest are the colloquial structures, such as the station, the Post Office and the port buildings.
One of the citys highlights is the triumphal arch, called the Gateway of India; because it was located in the place where passengers were landing in the city by sea, and it was through this gate that the British occupation forces left the country when it gained its independence.
Also of particular interest is the Museum of the Prince of Åuleål, whose collection of the richest collection of art and history, Archaeology, ethnography, an extensive collection of precious metal objects, miniature paintings, coins, sculptures, firearms and shooting weapons. Visiting the museum, its worth checking out the nearby Islamic Art Gallery, which doesnt have a permanent exhibition, but regularly hosts a variety of exhibits.
At night, its worth a walk along the Marin Drives side of the island, across from the port and considered the best place to walk in Mumambea. Its also on the coastal side of the river, with the Torrevale Aquarium, opened in 1961 and home to the countrys finest collection of marine flora and fauna. A stroll along the waterfront can take you to the most fascinating part of the city – the Malabarra hill, home to some of the richest people in Mumbai. At the top of the hill is a huge reservoir that supplies water to the entire south side of the city, at the top of which are a series of gardens, – The Orchards of Ferrosocha Mekhta. And not far from these gardens there are –Towers of Silence – they are thickly covered with a leafy canopy, important in the burial of the exiles of Persia – the parsis, the followers of Christianity, the cultural buildings. Also in the area of the & ndquo;s Garden of Places is a favorite place of the citizens – the Kamaala Neru Park. Named in honor of Jawaharlal Nehrus soulmate, the park features all sorts of childrens facilities such as cumbersome tubing, bobbleheads and other facilities to keep the children entertained.
