The vast expanses of Quebec lie to the north from the St. Lawrence River and are washed by the Goujon Gulf (to the west), the Goujon Proliferation and Ungaugava Gulf (to the north), and the St. Lawrence Gulf (to the south-east). The first Europeans in Quebec are believed to be the Vikings, who came here in the 10th century. It was not until the 16th century that attempts were made to investigate the St. Lawrence and Québécois territories. In 1627-1763, the region belonged to France (the New France clause); in 1763-1867, it belonged to Great Britain. Since 1867, Quebec has supported the idea of a confederation and became part of Canada as an autonomous state.
