Hartheford, in central Connecticut, is the third-largest city in the state and its capital. It spread out on the banks of the Connecticut River. The other river – the Park River &ndash, which divides Hartford from north and south, now runs through pipes.
The first colonists in the area were the Hollanders. In 1623, they founded the present historic center of Hartford as Fort of Good Hope (Fort Hope). In 1635 English settlers came here and founded a settlement not far from the Dutch. Their colony was first called Newtown. In 1637 it was first called Charterford – appropriately named for the English town of Charterford. In the 19th century, the city was the center of abolitionism (the movement for abolition of slavery). From 1875, Hartford became the permanent capital of Connecticut. Even so, it competed with New York-Haven for the title of administration of the state.
It is curious that the predominant ethnic group in Hartford is from Latin America, especially from Peruerto Ricoi. Several of the citys mayors were Puerto Ricans. About 40 percent of them are Afro-American and Moules.
Hartford has a leisurely, pragmatic way of life. Unlike many American capitals, the economy of Hartholding is dominated by industry (mainly machinery) rather than the state sector.
Hartfords main landmarks are the Kipperonecoquita, the construction of the historic center, and the museums of two famous American painters: Mark Twain (who lived here from 1874-91) and Harriet Beecher-Stowe (who died in Hartford).
