Grand Junction is located in the western part of the state at the confluence of the Gunnison River into the Colorado River. The city has an area of exactly 100 km², of which 1 km² is open water.
The city is served by the airport of the same name and major highways I-70, US 6 and US 50 pass through Grand Junction.
Before 1921, the Colorado River was called the Grand River, the Great River, which is where the first part of the city’s name comes from. Junction in English means “junction, crossing, point of branching,” indicating the city’s location at the confluence of the two rivers.
