Little Rock is the administrative center of the state of Arkansas, USA. Population – 197.881 thousand people (2018). It is the center of an agglomeration with 699,800 residents in 2010.
Before the arrival of whites, the area was inhabited by Native American tribes. The first European to explore the region was the Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto in 1541.
The name of the place (little rock) was given in 1722 by the French explorer Bernard de la Arpe who proposed the foundation of a trading port here. A settlement at what is now Little Rock was founded in 1821, it received city status 10 years later; by the 20th century, with the development of bauxite mining, Little Rock became a major economic center.
The events of 1957, when Governor Orville Faubus refused to comply with a court order (Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka) to educate black and white students together, which de jure forbade racial segregation in the United States, became widely publicized. In 1957, after city leaders, led by Governor O. Faubus, prevented nine black children from attending Central High School, U.S. President Dwight Eisenhower ordered troops into Little Rock who broke white resistance. Thus the city became one of the symbols of the white struggle for civil rights.
