Edinburg, TX

Overall Score

3.7

Edinburg is a city in the United States located in southern Texas, the administrative center of Hidalgo County.

The settlement was originally called Chapin after one of its founders. Developers John Klosner and William Briggs were instrumental in designating the settlement as the administrative center of the county. Chapin was deemed an accessory to murder and in 1911 the town was renamed Edinberg after John Young’s birthplace. In 1909 the first railroad from Brownsville was built into the town. In 1912 the first Baptist church was built. Later came the Lutheran, Presbyterian, Methodist, and other churches. A Catholic church did not appear until 1926. In 1915, an irrigation system appeared in the city, and originally a cattle ranching region began to develop farming. The city became a center for cotton, grain and citrus sales and processing. In 1919, Edinberg residents adopted a charter and the formation of local government began. In 1926, the railroad connected Edinberg with San Antonio and Corpus Christi.

Before World War II, the main sources of income were the cultivation of vegetables, sorghum, corn, sugarcane, and poultry raising. After the war, peach and melon production began, food processing plants, furniture production, oilfield equipment, concrete products, and agrochemicals were opened.
