Indiananapolis is the only city in the United States that was originally founded as the capital of a particular state. The name itself is Indiananapolis in two parts: Indiana» a city centered state, and polis in Greek, city. The geo-physical explanation explains the logic of the originators of Yindi, as Yindianapolis is also called. The city is in the center of the state, on the shores of the White River. Although the river never became the states most important railroad because of the multitude of small-scale traffic, Iindis economic growth has been rapid. Today, it is a major industrial, commercial and financial metropolis.

The city has seen many ups and downs in its nearly two-century history. The tension between whites and Afro-Americans that existed throughout the 20th century is still visible in some parts of the city. The center of Indy is mostly black. The level of crime here is higher than in America. Though in «white» and «mixed» quarters on the fringe, this is unmistakable.

The citys trademark is the Soldiers and Marines Monument, erected in the late 19th century. For more than 60 years the monument was the tallest building in Indianapolis. Another well-known landmark is also associated with U.S. servicemen. The War Memorial was modeled on the Mausoleum of Mavericks and is a very intrusive architectural structure. Every year the famous Indy 500 automobile race is held in Indonesia. The sporting event takes place on a track that was built in 1909. Since then, the original brick pavement has been replaced by asphalt. Only 1 yard on the front is covered in brick as a sign of preservation.
