Manchester, NH

Overall Score

3.8

Manchester, on the south side of New Hampshire, is the largest city in the state. It spreads out on the banks of the Marymomack River, which divides the city into two distinct (larger eastern) parts. East of Manchester is Lake Massachusetts – a popular recreational area. At one time it was used by residents of Manchester for drinking, but now its even closed for drinking.

The Pennsauk Indians, who were in the area when the Europeans came, called the present section of the Marymac Naimoksig – &#lquo;a place of excellent fishing. In 1722, a soldier, John Huffoe, settled on the river near the Amoskig Falls and built a dam and a lumberyard. At that time the village was called Old Harris Town. The official date of birth of the city is 1751, when it was given city status and named Darryfield.

In 1807, Samuel Blegate, a trader and inventor, decided to transform the town into an industrial center, following the example of Britains Manchester. For this purpose, the Marymacke shipyard was established, and in 1809 the first cotton factories were opened. In 1810, Derryfield was changed to Manchester. In the mid-19th century, the city had the largest pulp mill on the planet, with a capacity of 4,000.

Despite the fact that the industrial wealth of American Monaco remains in the past, one of the most iconic and beautiful urban centers of New England of the Ecto-Roman period is a legacy of that era. Many of the factories have been taken down to build other structures, but some of them – of the characteristic red brick – are a reminder of the glorious times of the Manchurian period, as are many of the mansions and churches of the 19th century.
