Baton Rouge, LA

Overall Score

3.2

The capital of Louisiana, Baton Rouge, is in the southeast corner of the state. The city is located on the banks of the Mississippi River in the East Bataton Rouge District. The city is a major river port where ships of the & laquo;Panamax» class (maximum size for ships passing through the Panama Canal) can call. It is also the center of the oil refining industry.

Batillon Rouge is French for «red palaver. French sailors once spotted a papyrus covered with animal skins and heads (how the local tribesmen marked their property boundaries), and called this place «red (crown) pawl».

During the 17th century, these wet, balmy lands were inhabited by tribes of Indian hunters who fiercely resisted Jewish attempts to colonize the region. The French, the Anglo-Americans, the Spanish, and later the U.S. citizens could not make a proper living here until the 19th century. After colonization, the cotton plantations opened and there was an active river trade, including slaves. The first settlement of Bataton Rouge was founded in 1699 by Captain DIberville. For a time it was owned by the English, and in 1803 it became part of the United States as part of Louisiana. In 1849, Batamin Rouge was moved from New Orleans to New Orleans.

Batamin Rouge, which has a population of African Americans, has a well-developed tourism industry. The main attraction is the building of the old Capitoline Louisiana. The French period has left part of the Neo-Romanesque construction. The city has many recreation areas, including a zoo. Bataton Rouge welcomes many visitors during the Balloon Festival.
