Manteca is a city in the Central Valley of California, 76 miles (122 kilometers) east of San Francisco. It was founded by Joshua Cowell in 1861. Cowell claims to own approximately 1,000 acres (4.0 square kilometers) of land and has built houses on the corner of what is now Maine and Yosemite, where Bank of America is now. In 1873, the Central Pacific Railway laid a track directly through the area. In 1918, Manteca was merged into one city, and Joshua Cowell became its first mayor. In 1938, photojournalist Dorothea Lange took photos of William & Mary Dimotakis (immigrants from Crete, Greece) and their youngest son George in 1918. Their family farm in Manteca is used by the Farm Security Administration. The farm near the industrial park is still owned by the Dimotakis family. As early as the 1970s, Manteca mainly existed in the agricultural sector, and it was still just a stop between the two highways, Interstate 5 and Interstate 99. The continued rise in housing prices in the Bay Area has caused families in the Bay Area to look eastward for more affordable places to survive. Since the completion of the 120 bypass section of National Highway 120, Manteca has become a popular choice for these travelers. In the 1990s, the population of the city increased, and the third high school (Serra High School) was built. The first two were Manteka High School and East Union High School. The population of Manteca continues to increase, with some houses being built in areas that used to be farmland in the north and southeast. Since 1980, the population of Manteca has more than tripled. Manteca is the home of the "Unforgotten Memorial Day event", the largest veteran memorial event on the West Coast. The event is held on the Sunday before Memorial Day every year. The event attracted more than 20,000 attendees.
