Marysville was founded in 1872 as a trading post by James P. Comfort, but was not settled by other settlers until 1883. Historically, the area subsisted on timber and agricultural products; the growth of strawberry fields in Marysville led to the town being nicknamed “Strawberry City” in the 1920s.

In the 1970s and 1980s, the city experienced its first wave of suburbanization, which led to the development of new residential and utility connections. Between 1980 and 2000 Marysville’s population quintupled. In the early 2000s, annexation of unincorporated areas to the north and east expanded the city to more than 20 square miles (52 km) and increased the population to 60,000.
